Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC)

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is responsible for enforcing federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of the person's race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, transgender status, and sexual orientation), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information.

The laws apply to all types of work situations, including hiring, firing, promotions, harassment, training, wages, and benefits.

State by State Guide to Local Discrimination Commissions

Each state has its own division charged with protecting the civil rights of the state's residents. These commissions typically work to eliminate cases of discrimination by enforcing the state's civil rights laws. That can include discrimination in housing, employment, places of public accommodation, and more. Find the link to your state to learn more about your division's work.

A Better Balance

The goal of A Better Balance is to make our society more hospitable to families by promoting and supporting policies that would allow parents to remain in the workforce without compromising the well being of their families. They seek to reduce the stress of conflicting work-family demands and responsibilities and end discrimination against workers who care for their children or other family members. In addition, they will promote greater equality by reducing the wage gap between men and women with family responsibilities and encouraging men to take on a greater share of care work. Likewise, they will ensure that the work of providing care in the home, whether by family members or by professionals, is valued.

A Better Balance maintains a national work-family legal helpline, which can be reached at 1-833-633-3222.
